Sunlight and Shadows

Month: September 2025

  • Stalled

Drowning in words, but nothing to say

Wanting to act, but running away

Knowing these feelings will drive me insane

But still I hold on tight to the pain

Feeling so bad, but not knowing why

Looking for help, but too scared to try

Trying to look at what is inside

But fearing my world will just be denied

This chaos inside will tear me apart

Until I can find the truth in my heart

  • Maze

How do time and place contrast

That time goes by but places last?

Time changes place, then time moves on

While somehow place holds moments gone

But pieces of both time and place

Are carried forward in the race

They seep within us, mixing, shaping

    And unexpectedly escaping

To mold and meld with future time

To give life rhythm, tone, and rhyme

How do time and place entwine

To mark events where they align?

    Abstract and tangible unite

And pieces of a story write

Then move on forward to the next

Unless preserved in mind or text

That keep past stories living on

To make a space where we belong

We mark these moments in life’s climb

Through the maze of place and time

  • Falling

It’s funny how falling off of a cliff

Does not always happen in one moment swift

Sometimes you don’t know that you started down

Til the last bit of sliding when you hit the ground

And everything hurts, and everyone’s gone

You’ve plunged into darkness, can’t see to go on

It’s funny how falling off of a cliff

Is sometimes only a feeling, as if

The world is crumbling from under your feet

When really it’s only shifting your seat

And maybe the landscape contracted or grew

But you’re still on top, if you can push through

  • Sunrise

I came upon a lilac dawn

Lake fog mist in purple wisps

Trailing form of last night’s storm

Melting away in gold sun’s ray

    Promising the hope of spring

    Dawn lingers in purple fingers

    Splashing light across the night

    Cotton swirled by clouds unfurled

Breaking day to light from gray

    Promising the hope of spring

  • Promise

    Rock, road, yours alone

    Up against the wall

    Hard place, go through it

    Never stop on your dreams

    The hand that opens doors

    Your eyes, when I fly

    Truth, lost, more to say

So dark can’t shine, be found

    Shadows only reflect the sun

    Open up to the light

    Quietly waiting to grow

    Promise alight, new dawn

  • Not

I am not thinking about a pink elephant in a purple sky

I am not thinking about what happens when dreams die

I am not thinking about a cage full of yellow birds

I am not thinking about what can change with a few words

I am not remembering the roads I didn’t take

I am not remembering a princess castle birthday cake

I am not remembering that glance in the rearview mirror

I am not remembering all the things I wrote to get here

I am not wishing for a fancy carriage or silver skates

I am not wishing for a trip across all fifty states

I am not wishing for one more spin on the dance floor

I am not wishing for a different life anymore
