Sunlight and Shadows

  • Twisted Whiskers

Unique New York, new squeak to torque

He knew she threw three free throws

We shall surely see the sun shine soon

For wetter weather gets harder as it goes

    Rugged rubber baby buggy bumpers

Full of yellow leather feather flight

By the worsted switch of an Irish wristwatch

We light a nightlight for a night like tonight

  • Marblehead Light

I stand in utter darkness, thick and deep

Below, the rough waves crash on endlessly

Around me, stinging wind and cold rain weep

And yet I set my eyes in faith before me

For the one hope in this uncertainty

And there it comes, a beam of clear green light

In steadfast rhythm shines on fearlessly

A compass beacon sent to land and sea

The faithful lighthouse guides worn travelers through the night

  • All Things New

I will not walk that road again

I will not walk it, not begin

I will not do what I did when

I turned onto it way back then

I will not sing that song once more

I will not sing it, not restore

The past of loss that came before

I will not let its false notes soar

I will not think those thoughts anew

I will not think them, not review

I will not drag my present through

What’s passed away, no longer true

But I will walk a brand new way

And I will sing new songs today

And I will think and I will say

To in the fresh, whole present stay

  • May Morning

The heavy brush of morning mist

    Rolls across my skin

As pink and orange clouds’ fingertips

    Stretch to the day begin

The birds shout out their joyful cheer

    The morning now to greet

    And sun-touched roses open wide

    Their fragrance warm and sweet

Oh to catch the mist that holds

The scents, the hues, the song

And keep it in a bottle

    To sip the winter long

  • Ambush

Like a deer in the headlight

Is fear in the dead of night

You freeze by degrees as you stand there wide-eyed

    It’s illusive, irrational

    And it feels insurmountable

A creeping and deepening mountain of trouble

You have to show you despise it

That you know the sly lies that it

Hides on all sides in a maze of disguises

Make the past fall behind you

Shake the last walls of residue

Til you’re grounded in now and the future of new

  • Play It Again

Play for me – a happy tune

Of butterflies and sun and June

Play for me – a dancing reel

To match the lilting joy I feel

Play for me – a solemn dirge

To mark where love and grief converge

Play for me – a mournful air

Perhaps I can find solace there

Play for me – a regal march

To high step through a milestone arch

Play for me – a simple rhyme

So I can clap my hands in time

Play for me – an ancient ode

To guide me on this weary road

Play for me – a lullaby

Of twinkling stars and midnight sky
