Sunlight and Shadows

  • Watershed

I stepped out and I fell in

The ledge I trusted was too thin

I reached and got my fingers stepped on

    I found out I was a pawn

I cannot show my pain to you

Since using others is all you do

But still it hurts me just the same

Like I’m the loser in your game

I see now how I was misled

And know what I will do instead

To let go of the pain I feel

And help the wounds recede and heal

  • Past

    We borrowed history

    To become our story

    Untangling the past

    To understand the mystery

    We borrowed history

    To keep from repeating

    Revealing the ghosts

    That we’d be defeating

    We borrowed history

    But didn’t stay there

    Claiming the victory

    From scars our pasts bear

  • Footsteps

Walking in the footsteps I took so long ago

Looking back through years past on what I didn’t know

Pondering life’s meaning, how moments come and go

Feeling all those things now I couldn’t feel back then

Wondering the reason that I am here again

Thinking of the choices, of what else could have been

Letting go of questions of why and how and when

Stepping through the splinters of hurt that still are here

Lighting up past darkness so I no longer fear

Storing up the good things, the moments I hold dear

Turning toward the sunshine so shadows disappear

Walking in new footsteps as future pathways grow

  • Letting Go

Sometimes you fight by standing strong

    Speak out against everything wrong

    But sometimes fighting walks away

Your absence speaks when you can’t stay

When you put in your heart and soul

Letting go can take its toll

You have to pick up each strewn piece

Find what to keep and to release

Moving on still hurts, it’s rough

Releasing those deep bonds is tough

But faithful service is worth the cost

And love freely shared is never lost

  • Trapeze

Walking on a bridge so high

    Finding footholds in the sky

So much to lose, so far to fall

But not crossing will lose it all

    Sunset light is fading fast

Don’t know how long time will last

Thin tangled railings line the way

That must be crossed here, now, today

On this bridge I only see

    The churning water under me

    I can’t see, but still I know

That there are strong supports below

They’re grounded in the solid rock

And to the shore they safely dock

So I have no need to dread

If I will keep my eyes ahead

    Looking back in clearer skies

    I see the trapeze crystalize

To form a backdrop, solid ridge

That guides me on to the next bridge

  • Valleys

    Confusion is a smoky haze

That settles on a town for days

    Disappointment is a fall

From a push off of a wall

    Regret is a relentless flame

That burns within with deadly aim

    Anticipation is a cloud

That either sun or rain does shroud

    Exhaustion is a heavy weight

That slows you down til it’s too late

    Failure is a zero score

On tests you never saw before

    Criticism is a knife

You chip away on your own life

    Disapproval is a blind

To block out others from your mind

    Courage is the faithful trust

To step out, keep on when you must

    Victory is the summit view

Of all the valleys you walked through
