Sunlight and Shadows

Category: Strength

  • Promise

    Rock, road, yours alone

    Up against the wall

    Hard place, go through it

    Never stop on your dreams

    The hand that opens doors

    Your eyes, when I fly

    Truth, lost, more to say

So dark can’t shine, be found

    Shadows only reflect the sun

    Open up to the light

    Quietly waiting to grow

    Promise alight, new dawn

  • Mission

Let the wheels roll for freedom

Fill the road full for freedom

    Although silent for a while

Now the bells toll for freedom

    We will stand on conviction

Take back what they stole for freedom

    No division, no distraction

    Unified our goal for freedom

    We won’t stop until victory

Makes our new lives whole for freedom

  • One More Try

    Asking, seeking, looking, knocking

    Rising, plodding, stepping, walking

    Holding hopes and crying tears

    Keeping dreams and having fears

Rising up to step once more

    Asking for an open door

    Doubting, lacking, missing, stalling

    Failing, sinking, losing, falling,

    Taking hits and ending dreams

    Dropping hopes and tearing seams

    Failing every time I try

    Doubting if I’ll ever fly

    Finding, staying, being, knowing,

    Reaching, healing, loving, growing

    Gaining trust and forging ties

    Healing wounds and changing lies

    Reaching for a better place

    Finding safety, peace, and grace

  • Dragging Feet

The road it looks so long and dark

I hesitate each time I start

I turn away and say I’m done

Just leave the battle never won

I look to find a different course

And put the cart before the horse

I think the road I have is wrong

Surely mine is not so long

If only I will just walk on

Whether the road is dark or long

Trust that I will find the way

If only I work hard today

Step out, move forward, stay on track

Look for the future, don’t look back

Believing I can walk this road

Is half the battle, half the load

  • Resolve

A tiny plant, so new, so young

Up from an inert seed has sprung

It bravely breaks through crusty earth

Its place in life won’t change its worth

In garden or dump its voice is heard

“With two perfect leaves, I’ll change the world”

A careless shoe, so old, so worn

    Treads in oblivion or scorn

One step it takes to crush the sprout

That so much time took to bring out

To phony safety that plant was lured

To naively try to change the world

A broken plant, so strong, so wise

From trampled soil yet will rise

It stands up brave with hope anew

Faith still in what one plant can do

With resolve that cannot be deferred

In one small way it has changed the world
