Sunlight and Shadows

Category: Metaphor

  • Stitches

    Running stitches round a hem

    Running down and up again

    Piecing quilts and piecing dreams

    Mending hearts and mending seams

    Sewing love in many ways

    Sowing seeds for future days

    Pinning patterns for a shirt

    Pinning plans that somehow work

    Cutting fabric, cutting losses

    Patching tears and patching bruises

    Basting hopes in fragile strings

    Basing faith on unseen things

    ,
  • Distortion

The ache was only a mirror

A hard glass wall of fear

    A trick of the light

    To obscure my sight

    And keep only sorrow near

The wish was only a star

    A twinkling glow afar

    A promise of light

    That blinks out of sight

    A distracting repertoire

The life was only an act

    A shell with stuffing packed

    A play thing too light

    To keep within sight

And let me keep hiding from fact

    ,
  • Star Dust

    Shooting stars

    Twilight dusk

    Memories appear

    Twinkling lights

    Points in time

    Gather far and near

    Distant orbs

    Galaxies

    Now seen crystal clear

    Midnight tiptoes here

    ,
  • Long Road

How do I find the way from here

Past this pain and the chain of fear?

Why is the cliff edge taunting so near

Rutted track as I try to steer

Threatening all that I once saw clear?

Sun turns to mist and stars to mist

Shards of ice in a trembling fist

Eyes that yet burn with frozen tear

Search for answers in troubled past

Hope to find a way home at last

Here I wait for the light of dawn

Fighting through til the fog is gone

No matter what, I will hold on

    Through this painful ponderous load

No matter what, I will go on

No matter how long is the road

    ,
  • Broken Road

I set out to find my way

    Many years ago

I stumbled, fell so many times

    There’s one thing I know

That every road I traveled down

    Took me forward, further on

No matter just how lost I was

    There always came the dawn

I look back on all the time

    It took to get here

I wish I could have seen the plan

    Through each long, hard year

But I just smile on days long gone

All the things I’ve seen and done

And turn to face the road ahead

    Always toward the sun

  • Hope

Hope cries like the bird at night

    Starting to sing before dawn

Fighting the dark’s chains of doubt

Finding a limb to cling upon

    Undoubting the fact of light

Even when the last star is gone

Hope fights like the ship at sea

Rowing just as hard as they can

    Unwilling to admit defeat

Despite the great dark ocean span

Fixing on the beam of light

That promises there is still land

Hope stands like the flower strong

Beaten down by the pouring rain

    Seeing through the endless storm’s

    Driving torrents and crushing pain

Still holding its head up high

With faith the sun will shine again
