Sunlight and Shadows

  • Turning Back the Clock

    Tick tock goes the clock

    Every hour losing power

    Tock tick with a click

    One chime backward time

    Hands toward backward

    Moving wrong every dong

    Rewind til you find

    One chime backward time

    Strike four, in the door

Of the house came the mouse

    Strike three, here ran he

    One chime backward time

    Strike two, up he flew

    Scamper, stop, at the top

Strike one, down he did run

    One chime backward time

  • Moon Rise

    Great shining orb ascending

Painting clouds with a rosy glow

The flaming light breaks the horizon

Caught in slivers by waves below

Emerging by seconds into the sky

A perfect stone of reflected light

    On an ever-changing trajectory

To project the sun into the night

Reflected glory of a greater light

    Freely showered on us here

To guide the creatures of the night

And remind us that day is near

    While echoing across the waves

In beams so silent and so strong

The moon yet faithfully shines down

To hold our dreams the whole night long

  • The Race

    Four and twenty blackbirds

    Sitting in a tree

    Picked a peck of peppers

And took them all for free

You can talk to me til

You are blue in the face

But do not judge until you see

    The tortoise win the race

    The tortoise is the hero

    The hare is the fool

In this tale but do not take

    This as all life’s rule

    The moral of the story

    If you really care

Is do not judge another’s place

    Unless you have been there

  • There to Stay

Snow on the ground is there to stay

In piles or snowmen or snowplowed towers

For even days upon days of sunny skies

Do not melt what came down in a dozen hours

As the snow turns to ice, and ice to slush

There seems no way to make it rush

For the ocean-like blanket thrown all around

So slowly, so slowly seeps into the ground

So just, when it’s snowing, be ready to say

“Snow on the ground is there to stay”

Twinkling on trees and wreaths so bright

Christmas is a hike through a winter wood

Tall trees have ice and storms withstood

Join in the laughter, all is good
